EHZ Business Meeting

A lovely sunny day and such is the stress and strain of working from home that I'd arranged to meet up with my business partner for our weekly discussion ... on the seafront at Ovingdean. Here we are busy at work!

Combined with some exercise as we'd both cycled from different directions to meet half-way.

Ahhh - it's a hard life! :)

EHZ - Making Work A Great Place To Be

Running - and avoiding dogs

Went out for a run this evening having put it off all day and not managed one this morning. Amazingly enough I managed a longer run than normal which was pretty impressive having had not much sleep and only a cup of coffee and a custard tart all day.

Anyway despite the fact that my running has been a bit sporadic I must either be fitter than I thought or my blood is more efficient now and I'm building up new muscle - which according to an old article I came across today, takes about six weeks! I managed to run pretty much continuously which I don't often manage when I'm over-tired, especially on the uphill bits.

My pulse metre on my pedometer is obviously wildly out as it decided my pulse, having run up the hill, was 82bpm and dropped fairly quickly to 54bpm. Er, I don't think so. I'm really not THAT fit! Double it and it would be about right. Must get a new battery for my Polar HRM - that's more accurate when it's not deciding my heart-rate is up at 250bpm.

Another bonus of the football being on is that it's quieter when I go out and I don't have to avoid as many dogs coming up to 'play'. The little ones are the worst as they're more likely to snap at your heels. I don't mind dogs in general - it's more about how much control their owners have over them. Most people are quite considerate and put their dogs on a lead or just hold them as I go past. Others are totally oblivious.

Juggling in and around Brighton

I was just sent this by Joe Hague, one of my Prince's Trust businesses who I've been working with for a couple of years now. He's been working hard to establish himself as a music composer for film and TV but is also a very talented juggler as I think this shows.

It cheered up a grey and windy start to the day - I hope it does the same for you.

Brighton Seafront

Yesterday morning I went for a walk along Brighton seafront. I had dropped off my car for a service and arranged to meet up with my business partner in Hove. It’s a long time since I’ve walked all the way along the seafront from Brighton into Hove. I don't get out often!

A sure sign of summer – hordes of foreign students standing in large groups taking up the pavement and talking loudly to each other. Never in small groups, they appear to prefer safety in numbers and move around or rather stand, in groups of twenty to thirty so manoeuvring round them usually requires stepping out in front of the oncoming traffic or forcing your way through them with their brightly coloured rucksacks.

The seafront it full of the standard things you’d expect to see. Candy-floss and sweet stalls, shops selling buckets and spades and postcards, fish and chips, plus the ‘World Famous – Gypsy Rose’, well I think it was actually Professor … someone or other, there's always one of those. We do however, have the World Famous Pump Room – an ice cream shop selling 30 plus varieties of ice cream. There are of course also the usual mix of pubs and more and more clubs appearing alongside the boutiquey art shops with their seaside portrayal of deckchairs, sunsets and seagulls and the now very dilapidated West Pier, an old fashioned carousel and a spreading array of tables and chairs to give the impression of a Mediterranean seaside climate. Bit chilly this morning and pebbles isn't quite the same.

It was still early, so there were several delivery trucks moving up and down along the paved walkway and a group of eager OAPs ‘walking for health’ from one pier to the other. Although much of the area has been greatly improved over the years as you walk further west along the promenade it gets more and more worn out. The West Pier is rapidly disintegrating into the sea – there’s not much left of the walkway out to the end. More of it fell into the sea in the recent storms. All that’s now left is the bare bones of the structure. They’re going to have a hard time restoring it now. Someone has also filled in what was a paddling pool with a large area of tarmac, which is a sad solution. The old bandstand is due to be restored, which might at least be an easier task than trying to tackle the West Pier.

I ended up at the Meeting Place CafĂ© on Hove Lawns for a coffee, to sit, think and watch the sea for a while – still in the sunshine which was warm if you ignored the cool sea 'breeze'.

Grey suits and faces.

I was at a network meeting the other week - my third breakfast meeting of the week. Looking around the assorted people gathered around the room I was surprised and slightly perturbed by the 'greyness' of some of them. Not just pale but actually looking grey and incredibly unhealthy. As if "Night of the Living Dead" had become transposed to the grey, wet breakfast meeting. Now that the weather has warmed up there's a blinding array of lily-white legs and arms peeking out from shorts and t-shirts.

Spending too much time cooped up in their offices working away in air-conditioned environments or just not getting out into the fresh air. It doesn't take much sunshine to feel the benefit and I'm the last person to encourage baking under a hot midday sun. I'll start turning nicely pink in just a few minutes. People spend too much time at work as it is and are then too tired to do anything at the end of the day except collapse exhausted in front of the TV. No wonder obesity and stress related illnesses are rising.

You might be tied to your desk during the day but you can still take time out at lunchtime or even at the end of the day to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. I'm lucky enough to work from home so I can be pretty flexible around my working times and will happily take a break in the garden or go out for a walk or run in the sunshine.

Taking a break is good for you and getting away from your desk - even if it's just for half an hour is even better. With the weather finally warming up and a hot summer on the way, even if you do work in an office - make a point of getting out to enjoy some sunshine. Take a walk round the block, down to the shops, out to a nearby park or green area. Get out at the end of the day to get some exercise or just sit out on a summer evening.

Increase the amount of time you spend outside in fresh air and natural daylight and you'll feel better for it and look a lot less grey now summer has arrived.
